Run for the Whales

Runners and walkers are invited to join in the popular Run for the Whales along the scenic coast of South Maui. Runners choose from a 5K walk or fun run or a half marathon run...plus a 2K children's race! Participants receive a free race t-shirt, a free post-race breakfast, and free electronic timing (for the 5K and half marathon). There are medals for the top finishers and great prize giveaways; the entry fees are. Fees benefit marine education programs for Maui schoolchildren. Maui's Parade of Whales

Maui residents and visitors turn out by the thousands for this community parade in honor of the humpback whales that migrate to Maui each winter. Music, floats, gymnasts, marching bands, costumed characters and a life-sized humpback whale balloon are all part of the fun! 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. traveling south along South Kihei Road on Maui, ending at Kalama Park by the big whale statue. The parade is the official kick-off to Whale Day, a free, all day celebration of whales. More info.

Maui's Whale Day Celebration

Maui's largest and longest running celebration of its famous wintertime residents, the humpback whales! This free, all-day celebration-in-the-park is hosted by the non-profit Pacific Whale Foundation and includes live music by some of Hawaii's top musicians, great food by popular Maui restaurants, a gigantic craft fair featuring more than 100 local artists, environmental displays, activities for children, a parade (at 9 a.m.) and lots of information about whales! The Great Whale Count

Noted author of four books about whales, Greg Kaufman has studied humpback whales for more than 30 years. He is the founder and president of Pacific Whale Foundation, Maui's oldest and largest organization dedicated to protecting whales and their habitats. Kaufman will present a dynamic multi-media show and free talk about his months of "living and breathing whales" as he says, in the South Pacific Ocean. The talk includes amazing photos and footage of the planet’s only known all-white humpback whale. At the Wailea Marriott Hotel in Wailea. Workshop 1:"Whale Photo Safari"
Join Pacific Whale Foundation researcher Annie Macie and other noted wildlife photographers on a whalewatch photo safari from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. aboard the Ocean Explorer from Lahaina Harbor. Participants will receive expert advice on capturing whale images and learn about utilizing the latest digital photo techniques and data storage. Please bring your cameras. Workshop 2: "The Delicate Art of Watching Whales from Land"
Learn tips on spotting whales from shore as well as identifying whale behaviors and interpreting social interactions. This free workshop is led by a noted humpback whale research scientist and a certified marine naturalist from Pacific Whale Foundation at Papawai Point (the scenic lookout) on Route 30, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Binoculars provided during the workshop. Keiki Eco Day

Pacific Whale Foundation's expert marine naturalists will present the inaugural Keiki ECO (Educating Children Outdoors) Conference on February 19. Children in grades K-5 will be able to participate in a unique outdoor learning experience. Kids will participate in workshops, have opportunities to explore presentations by nature groups and educators, and enjoy a performance by the Banana Slug String Band. All participants are encouraged to bring a waste-free lunch.
