Great Whale Count

1,010 Humpback Whale sightings tallied during the 2009 Great Maui Whale Count!

A total of 1,010 humpback whale sightings were recorded by more than 200 volunteers, during the 2009 Great Maui Whale Count, an annual event conducted by the nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation. Join us for the 2010 Great Maui Whale Count. See below for information.

The volunteers worked from 13 counting sites, along the south and west shore of Maui, in an area stretching from Makena Beach to Kapalua, and also on Maui's north shore at Hookipa. The count took place during a window of about three hours, between 8:30 and 11:40 a.m.. The volunteers, equipped with binoculars, compasses and data sheets, worked alongside Pacific Whale Foundation researchers and staff. Read the entire story >>
